Why doesn't 16
ounces of
coconut oil equal 16 ounces?
We would like to provide the following brief primer on
weights and measures in order to eliminate confusion and to
help people compare quantities and prices of coconut oil
offered by various suppliers. In everyday trade (at the grocery
for example) we see a wide variety of items which are sold
based on two different systems of measurement. Some items are
sold by weight and some by volume. Produce, for example, is
sold by weight. One pound is equal to 16 ounces. Liquid
products are typically sold by volume which is measured in
pints, quarts, gallons, etc. This volume measurement is also
given in fluid ounces. A fluid ounce may be equal to an ounce
by weight (avoirdupois) or it may not, depending on the density
of the substance being measured. The density of water is taken
as the standard and is equal to 1. One cup of water would equal
8 fluid ounces and would also weigh 8 ounces. Eight fluid
ounces of other substances (depending on whether they are more
or less dense than water) would weigh more or less than 8
ounces. A cup of rice crispies would have a volume of 8 fluid
ounces but would weigh much less than 8 ounces since the rice
crispies are much lighter than water.
Coconut oil is lighter than water. According to Hawley's
Condensed Chemical Dictionary the density of coconut oil is
0.92, so a cup of coconut oil (8 fluid ounces) actually weighs
only 7.36 ounces (8 X 0.92 =7.36). It is for that reason that
we have chosen to package Coconut Oil Supreme™ on the basis of
weight rather than volume and the reason that it is packaged in
a 1/2 liter bottle. A pint bottle (16 fluid ounces) would not
hold a full pound of coconut oil. We have listed some
equivalent measures of coconut oil below for your
reference.
1 pint (16 fl. oz.) = 14.72 ounces = .92 pounds by
weight
1 quart (32 fl. oz.) = 29.44 ounces = 1.84 pounds by
weight
1/2 gallon (64 fl. oz.) = 58.88 ounces = 3.68 pounds by
weight
1 gallon (128 fl. oz.) = 117.76 ounces = 7.36 pounds by
weight
1 Tablespoon of coconut oil = 13.05 grams
1 pint (16 fl. oz.) = 32 tablespoons
1 pound (16 oz. by weight) = 34.79 tablespoons
